Today’s school-leavers can’t say a whole sentence.

But you can restore their face-to-face communication skills – through specialist workshops and 1-to-1 coaching and mentoring

Staff

Communication is a core skill for anyone who has a teaching role, and the myriad of situations where those skills are tested is endless. Yet it is so often assumed that teachers simply have an inherent ability (indeed mastery) in this area. With vast experience in the education world stretching back to 1999, Laughton Scott is expertly placed to coach and train school staff in all of the communication scenarios they face. From Newly Qualified Teachers to Deputies and Heads, we help our teaching clients to thrive under the most challenging of circumstances. Because that is school life!

The ability to hold an audience, often for long periods, is tested daily. We show our clients how to use their voice and body language to maximise impact in front of students. What about assemblies, or holding large parent meetings? Those outside of the profession often assume that Public Speaking holds no fears for teachers, yet engaging a large audience is a very different experience to running an effective lesson and it is an absolutely crucial skill to ensure parental buy-in. We can help, developing confidence and the ability to construct memorable spoken content.

How about planning for and running meetings? Or handling awkward and difficult parents? Preparing for an interview, or indeed running one? The list of challenges that we have helped our clients to cope with and master goes on and on – the same as the number of challenges faced daily by teachers!

Qualifications and technical skills are important for getting on in life.

But in today’s business world, interpersonal ‘soft ‘skills are vital too.

The ability to listen…communicate…and work well with others…

…to learn from feedback…work under pressure…and manage time and priorities effectively…

These qualities help individuals succeed in the workplace. And they help businesses succeed in the market place.

Of course, soft skills aren’t just relevant to the world of work. They’re just as important in family and community life.

But ironically, as communications technology and social media become ever more dominant – especially amongst young people – face-to-face communication skills are suffering.

Introverted behaviour is on the rise…
with too many children and young adults becoming inarticulate…
…socially awkward…
…and often glued to a mobile phone or computer screen.

The result is an increasing gap between the needs of business and the abilities of young people.

Recent research suggests that soft skills will be worth over one hundred billion pounds to the UK economy by twenty-twenty.

But more than half a million Britons will be held back by a lack of social intelligence.

FTSE 100 companies report a worrying increase in young people with little inclination to even shake hands, make eye contact or smile during an interview.

And a survey of European chief executives finds that many young people lack the interpersonal skills needed to gain their first job or progress up the career ladder.

But at Laughton Scott, we know that soft skills can be taught. That anyone can learn to communicate better.

Through posture…eye contact…and clarity and tone of voice… and through positive mental and emotional preparation.

From a solid handshake to convincing a large audience, Laughton Scott’s ambition is to help bridge this skills gap.

We passionately believe that by working within schools, by helping young people early on, we can have a profound impact on their ability to get work and on their subsequent careers.

That’s got to be good for young people. And it’s good for business in Britain.

Our Services

Communication & Public Speaking

Educators have to hold audiences every day of their working life. This popular (and enjoyable!) 1 day workshop teaches the various verbal skills that senior school leaders need in order to flourish in the demanding school environment.

Difficult Meetings

Meetings are often the most common forum for communication in a school. Yet they can also be a black hole of dominant personalities, abandoned agendas, and wasted time. Just how often has a meeting taken an hour to come to a conclusion you reached in 5 minutes?

We can help you analyse the problems behind unproductive meetings. Working with an experienced facilitator, we recreate those challenging situations and personalities, and show how easily we can fall into pre-defined characters. The obstructive one. The one who shouts others down. The silent one. The pessimist. The martyr.

Delegates learn the techniques that will ensure you come across as warm, natural, engaging, and authoritative. And while you build your own skills in influencing and negotiating, you’ll also be working on listening, empathy, and building rapport.

Student Workshops

Working with groups of 10 to 150 students (yes, really!), the building blocks of effective communication in the adult world are addressed. We thought this so important in the development of the life chances for every young person that we made a short video to highlight our crucial work in the area. “Ben has worked to excellent effect with many of our staff, delivering communications training which has boosted confidence, competency and performance. Every single colleague he has worked with has rated him extremely highly and asked for more! I cannot recommend Ben highly enough.”
